A THRIVING INDUSTRIAL POLE

Backed by a qualified workforce, Quebec’s microelectronics industry is known for its outsourcing services, extensive network of universities and strong R&D sector. That’s why so many major players have decided to set up operations here.

EMERGING SECTOR

Microelectronics is omnipresent. We find it in many applications – transport, medicine, telecommunications, etc. – and in the composition of many objects – computers, smart phones, airbags automobiles, electricity meters, implants and more. In an environment of rapid technological change, the field of microelectronics in Quebec is emerging as an important strategic sector. Thus, Quebec gradually assembles a true ecosystem of microelectronics and adds to its hundred companies expertise in research, both at university and college.

A NUMBER OF BOOMING SECTORS

Quebec’s universities, businesses and research centres work in close cooperation. Those ties were important, for example, in fostering the creation of C2MI and RESMIQ , an inter-university research centre specializing in microelectronics. Such unique cooperative efforts help make Quebec an innovative force in the industry. Numbering about a hundred, Quebec’s microelectronics companies focus on three main sectors, all related to outsourcing services:

  • SEMICONDUCTORS

This sector is best known for its R&D on new products for international clients.

  • SPECIALIZED CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS FOR DESIGN, INSPECTION AND MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing and inspection processes and systems are behind the major technological strides made in this sector over the past few years.

  • ELECTRONICS ASSEMBLY AND PASSIVE COMPONENTS

The companies in this sector manufacture passive circuits and provide electronic component assembly services for such niche applications as custom cables, along with high-value-added components for specialized markets.

QUEBEC: A PLACE OF CHOICE

Quebec has one hundred companies specialized in microelectronics employing over 8000 people. Many of these companies are located in the Montérégie region, near the US border. The city of Bromont alone has nearly 3,000 of these jobs in internationally renowned companies. The benefits of Quebec¹:

ENABLING TECHNOLOGY

Microelectronics are found in all industries. This growing field creates new processes and new techniques for the development and improvement of existing technologies.

SKILLED WORKFORCE

Quebec has the largest pool of engineers in Canada. In addition it offers through its universities, many programs in applied science provide a full range of engineering courses.

ACADEMIC NETWORK

Within 100km of Bromont, we find six world-class universities that offer interesting programs in the field of microelectronics.

POSITIONING

Bromont, with its Scientific Park, is the epicenter of microelectronics in Quebec. The city is part of the “Northeast Corridor” of the industry, a group of companies that employ about 33,000 skilled workers.

RENOWNED COMPANIES

The microelectronics industrial pole is home to a large number of companies, including major players such as IBM, Ellison and Teledyne DALSA.

THE MIQRO INNOVATION COLLABORATIVE CENTRE

The C2MI is an international beacon in advanced packaging and microsystems. Active and seamless collaboration and synergy among the Centre’s members enables the rapid commercialization of next-generation prototypes.
