C2MI wins regional Startup Canada Award for supporting entrepreneurs

BROMONT BASED MIQRO INNOVATION COLLABORATIVE CENTRE (C2MI) IS THE 2017 WINNER OF STARTUP CANADA’S ENTREPRENEUR SUPPORT AWARD IN THE MONTREAL REGION.

Bromont, September 13, 2017 – The MiQro Innovation Collaborative Centre (C2MI) is the 2017 winner of Startup Canada’s Entrepreneur Support award in the Montreal region.

The award is given to academic institutions, government organizations or a not-for-profit business working to advance entrepreneurship in its region through its leadership, innovation and impact.

«We are proud of this acknowledgement of our work, are we not only supporting Canadian innovation but the Canadian Innovators that are at the foot of a nation’s successes» said Normand Bourbonnais, C2MI CEO. As a regional winner, C2MI is now in the race for a national startup award.

The MiQro Innovation Collaborative Centre was announced in 2009, after obtaining a $218M grant from the Ministère du Développement économique de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation (MDEIE) ($94,9M), Industry Canada ($82,95M) and privates partners (Université de Sherbrooke, IBM Canada Ltd and Teledyne DALSA) and several equipment partners as part of Canada’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program.

In 2010, C2MI is recognized as a Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) by the Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada (NCE), obtaining an additional funding of $14.1M over a 5 years period. In July 2015, C2MI received an additional funding from the Government of Canada following the 2016 Centers of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) Competition. This investment of $ 8 million over five years confirms C2MI’s role with Canadian companies conducting research and development of electronic systems to accelerate the commercialization of new products.

The C2MI ecosystem offers to start-ups companies not only commercialization financial support and a complementary network of services but mostly access to state-of-the-art equipment and a result oriented team. The main strength of the C2MI is its ability to bring together partners of multiple activity areas and complementary expertise to share their knowledge and work in collaboration to generate innovation. The Center encourages and supports start-ups with promising projects.

C2MI has a privilege role among the Canadian economy. Innovation developed in the Center can improve the quality of life of Canadians, because they take more and more space in our everyday products such as cars, electronics and all objects that can be found around the house. C2MI is directly involved in economic wealth through commercialization support and the role it plays with start-up companies. New products development is unreachable without Research and Development activities. Since its opening, in 2011, 231 M $ were invested in R&D by the members. 48.1 M$ in capital for scientific equipment were also invested to ensure that the equipment can support the market-driven technological innovation. More than 445 new industrial projects occurred, representing 4512 year-person jobs. C2MI ecosystem opened the way to 270 new markets. The Startup Canada Awards recognize those driving impact and demonstrating excellence in Canada’s entrepreneurship and innovation community.

The Startup Canada Awards culminates on October 19, 2017 with a red carpet Grand Finale in Ottawa celebrating the national winners.
